Literary Arts at the Center
The Ludington Area Center for the Arts provides a lively forum for poets and prose writers through a partnership with Ludington Visiting Writers, our in-house literary arts program. The joint venture provides a supportive and encouraging environment for writers of every genre, as well as the opportunity for community members to share in the best new writing being done in Michigan.
Visit the Ludington Area Center for the Arts events calendar to learn more about upcoming readings and events.
Ludington Visiting Writers Reading Series
The Ludington Visiting Writers reading series features notable Michigan writers of fiction, memoir, and poetry who publicly present their work and conduct programs and workshops at the Center, local schools and libraries. Ludington Visiting Writers has brought more than 70 noted Michigan writers to Ludington for readings and writing events, including poets Diane Wakoski and Jack Ridl, fiction writers Bonnie Jo Campbell and Peter Ho Davies, memoirists Michael Steinberg and Anne Marie Oomen, and screenwriter Lisa Enos.
Conferences and Workshops
The Ludington Area Center for the Arts is the site of the Ludington Visiting Writers annual writers conference, featuring workshops in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction led by noted writers and instructors from Michigan’s leading schools and universities, as well as panel discussions, craft presentations, and faculty and participant readings.
Throughout the year, Ludington Visiting Writers director George Dila leads fiction writing workshops in which local writers meet to discuss writing technique and engage in exercises to ignite the creative spark. The workshops meet in the Judith Minty Writers Room at the Ludington Area Center for the Arts.
Summer Writer-in-Residence Program
The Ludington Visiting Writers Summer Writer-in-Residence program brings regional poets and writers to the Ludington Area Center for the Arts to lead workshops for adults and youth, readings, presentations, and other community-focused events. Award-winning Michigan poet Phillip Sterling kicked off the program in 2009.
